Weezer Brings The Gathering Tour to Vancouver’s Rogers Arena

Weezer brought The Gathering Tour to Rogers Arena on September 12, with The Shins and Silversun Pickups joining the Vancouver stop.

The Shins handled the second opening slot, bringing a more restrained indie-rock sound to the arena before Weezer took over the stage.

Led by James Mercer, the band moved through familiar tracks including “Simple Song,” “Australia,” “Caring Is Creepy” and “New Slang.” Their set had a noticeably different feel from what followed, giving the night some contrast before the headliner arrived.

Once the stage changed over for Weezer, the production became part of the show immediately.

Instead of a typical arena backdrop, the band performed in front of a full suburban-style house, with the rest of the set dressed to resemble an oversized backyard. Above the house was the number 2226, a reference to 2226 Amherst Avenue in West Los Angeles, an important location from Weezer’s early years.

Members of the band lived and rehearsed at the Amherst house during the early 1990s, and some of Weezer’s earliest recordings were made there. The house later became even more recognizable to fans when the “Say It Ain’t So” music video was filmed there. Recreating 2226 as part of the tour production turned the backdrop into a reference to the place where much of the band’s early history took shape.

The band began with “Shine Again,” opening the Vancouver set with newer material before quickly turning back toward their earlier catalogue.

“Surf Wax America” followed, pulling the set back to the band’s 1994 debut. The shift between the first two songs was noticeable, moving from present-day Weezer straight into one of the albums that established the band’s sound more than three decades ago.

“Keep Fishin’” brought the set into the Maladroit era, continuing the movement between different points in Weezer’s catalogue.

Visually, the 2226 set remained one of the most noticeable parts of the show. Taking a location so closely connected to Weezer’s beginnings and rebuilding it inside Rogers Arena gave the production a little more meaning than a standard stage backdrop.

There is a certain contrast in seeing a band of Weezer’s size performing against a recreation of a place tied to the days when they were still rehearsing and recording music at home.

For the Vancouver stop, that contrast worked.

With The Shins offering a strong lead-in and Weezer moving between different eras of their catalogue, The Gathering felt rooted in the band’s history without being locked into one particular version of Weezer.

The 2226 house made that connection even clearer, bringing a piece of where the band started into one of Vancouver’s biggest rooms.
